WHY GERAKAS?
The Gerakas Peninsula is the most sought
after area on the island due to its beautiful golden sandy beaches lapped
by crystal clear azure seas. The nearby village of Vasilikos has a number
of tavernas and mini-markets conveniently located along its main road and
there is the endless soft golden sand of the nearby Ionian Beach, backed by
sand dunes, which gives it a natural beauty.
The safe shallow waters are ideal for children and for cooling off on those
glorious hot sunny days. The Gerakas Peninsula has recently been designated
as the first protected Marine Park in the whole of the Mediterranean, as it
is one of the last nesting sites of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Carreta-carreta.
Much time, effort and environmental campaigning by organisations such as Earth
Sea and Sky, Archelon Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, Medasset and
the National Marine Park of Zakynthos Authority continue to ensure that the
area remains under developed, unspoilt and quiet, so as not to disturb the
turtles’ summer nesting sites. Therefore, Gerakas beach is unique in
that you will not see hotels, apartments and rows of shops, bars and night
clubs, all you see is the rustic charm and natural beauty that makes Gerakas
the perfect haven.
Ionian Eco Villagers provides a quieter alternative for those seeking to enjoy a holiday away from the mass tourist resorts. Away from the beach, the spectacular scenery and rural charm makes Gerakas the perfect holiday destination for those wishing to take pleasure in the natural beauty and tranquillity that Gerakas has to offer. It is the perfect place for mountain biking and walking whether you are a serious walker or just fancy a relaxing stroll to delight in the views, flora and fauna. In May and September the area is carpeted with wild flowers, which gives the air a beautiful heady fragrance.
Ionian Eco Villagers’ properties have been carefully selected to ensure that whatever you choose, - villa, studio, apartment or cottage - you can be assured of its material quality and superb location. Gerakas Village comprises of a small number of individual holiday homes tucked away in lush private gardens surrounded by olive groves, wild flower meadows and pine scented hills. You will find peace and tranquillity wherever you are. The beach is only a 200 metre stroll. The tavernas, mini market and Garden bar are a short distance from the properties. The mini market, bar and Gerakas taverna are family run and you will receive the friendliest of welcomes. Traditional Greek evenings are regularly organised in the Vasilikos area for you to enjoy. For something a little different there is a host of organised conservation activities approved by the National Marine Park Authority. Small groups accompanied by qualified guides can participate in sailing and catamaran cruises, nature walks, morning survey with the volunteers (by prior arrangement), giving you the only chance to see hatchlings on the beach (depending on the season), as the beach is a restricted area from dusk to dawn during the breeding season.
